Buying the most powerful units won't help you in this game.
Because it has its own way of balancing itself, with the Army Points (AP) system; in short, the Army Point of your Company represents its rough power output on the field.
You will always have the same number of AP than your opponent at the beginning of a game, so it's up to you if you want to put 1 very powerful unit on the battlefield, or 10 weak units.
Either way, it won't make you win or help you in any way, since the game is balanced with these possibilities in mind.
Playing 10 weak units or 1 big is up to your own personnal preference, and most players prefer to do a mix of both (2 powerful but-not-ultimate units and more weaker units).
As for the wounds system, it's a whole other matter. It is really a problem we are considering very seriously right now.
The behavior ingame is nothing like what we wanted, and we need to investigate if it's only design, or bug(s).
In any case, it will change - the sooner the better.
We do not intend our game to be a "pay to win" (and we never will).
It simply does not match our vision of what we should do for you to support us.
So let us assure you that we will do everything that is in our power to change that as soon as possible.
In the meantime, if you feel reluctant to play online games because of the "broken" wound system, there are some things you could already try out in the game while we fix that
