It does not make sense to me, and was made this way only for gameplay purpose, to give the scorpions priests to play.

The Akkylannians actually have quite advanced technology (gunpowder, and metallurgy second only to the Dwarves' and the Helianthic Smiths of the Cynwall). They are drawing on a lot of late medieval/early Renaissance themes about how faith and science are actually complementary, not incompatible or opposite.

The Heresiarch, Dirz, was originally a scientist motivated by religious fervor. After all, man is an imperfect servant of Merin, the One True God; what if we could make man better? What if we could perfect him?

Dirz began some experiments and learned a lot. Among his revelations: Darkness gems, tied as they are to the principles of perversion and dynamism, were the best way to modify flesh without destroying it.

Well, one thing led to another, and soon enough Dirz and his followers were being hunted as apostates. They fled to the deserts of Syharhalna. A new god, Arh-Tolth, was revealed to Dirz, and he began to worship this god of knowledge.

Culturally, the alchemists of Dirz descend from the Griffins, and they have similar attitudes about knowledge, magic, and religion. Keep in mind, too, that the Faithful of Arh-Tolth are Iconoclasts.

And don't forget that the technology of gunpowder was provided to the Griffons by the Cynwäll, since they saw no use for it (because they relied on Helianth weapons and their strange beliefs in the Noesis).

And if you can control dragons anyway, I guess that cannons and muskets must seem like toys to be played with, but not to be taken serious at all.

And it was too, that just like Merin appeared to Arkavius in his visions, Arh-Tolth appeared for Dirz. They are more or less two sides of the same coin, and because the inquisition of the Griffons had the Akkylanian empire in it's iron grip, they sure as hell did everything to prevent anyone straying from the flock. Be reminded that the escape of Dirz triggered a great cleansing which took a lot of lives of the people of Akkylanie.

The Khidaryms use puny pistols D:
And I don't know any "Cynwall Kestrel" unit. Did it come out as part of the plastic Confrontation?

It is still a pistol. tbh. I have only seen the use of pistols as part of the assault shot-ability.

Anyway, my point still stands that griffins rely heavily on gunpowder, whereas the majority of ranged combat of the Cynwäll is concentrated in their Helianth crossbows, magic and dragon breath (DRAGON BREATH!!!)
