Hi all,

I don't know if this is already up somewhere (in which case I can't find it...help :p), but is there somewhere we can look for the definitive rules on the game?

So far I've been learning basically on unit interactions - I've got a decent grasp of how things work, but it would be nice if there were, for example, tables showing how your willpower increases your chances of casting spells of different difficulties. Or the damage your unit will take when it has toughness X and the attacker has damage Y. Or how cover affects shooting. etc...

Okay, so the system is actually fairly simple, but there are a couple points I'm not sure on. I'll try to get the basics to you. First things, a stat almost always increases a roll by 5% and damage/resistance by 1. Bonuses are also additive; if you have a 50% bonus, it won't increase your current chances by half again, it will simply add 50% to it. a 50% bonus changes 25% to 75%.

1) When a unit makes an attack roll, his accuracy is rolled against the target's parry(melee) or dodge(ranged). The calculation is 80% + 5x(attacker stat - defender stat). Thus, without any modifiers, a unit with 12 accuracy will automatically hit a unit with 8 parry. Note that there are lots of things that can affect these rolls, such as cover against an archer or encirclement. Encirclement is a bonus of 15% to your attack roll when your (melee) target is also in melee with a unit that is not engaged by any other enemy units. This bonus stacks, so if you've got 4 units surrounding one guy and those 4 units are only engaging the one guy, all 4 units will gain +45% (15 per other unit) to their chances. An important note is that the "engaging another unit" restriction is only applied to units not making an attack. so if 4 units are surrounding one but one unit is engaged by a second unit, the unit that is engaged will get the 45% bonus, but the other 3 will only get a 30% bonus.

2) When a unit disengages from an enemy unit, an attack of opportunity is rolled using the enemy unit's accuracy against the fleeing unit's dodge. All other calculations are normal.

3) A damage roll follows a specific formula. The damage calculation is equal to 9(or 10, not sure. might be different unit to unit, requires testing and data points that I haven't gotten around to yet.) plus the force of the attack minus the toughness of the defender. The force of the attack is equal to the damage of the attacker, unless in a magic attack where the force is stated within the description of the spell. So if a unit with damage 10 hits a unit with toughness 8, it will deal 9/10 + 10 - 8 for a total of 11/12.

4) When a unit makes an incantion roll, he must roll to succeed the check or his spell fails. the roll is equal to 80% + 5x(Will - Difficulty). So a unit with will 15 trying to cast a difficulty 13 spell has a 90% chance of success.

5) Cover affects ranged units in that if the defending unit is behind cover, a -5 (25%) is applied. if the attacker is behind cover, a -1 (5%) penalty is applied. This stacks, so if both units are behind cover, -30% penalty to hit.

Much of this is, I believe, explained in the tutorial. I'm not sure how much is or isn't, but I do believe I should stick this information in the wiki somewhere. Should be interesting.

Nope

its confirmed by the Devs that formula is fare more complex and noone convinced them to give fully details about it.

Interesting. That would explain why people seem to be reporting results of 9 and 10.

Though I do wish they would reveal the formula... it's not good for a strategy game to keep things like that secret.

IMO ingame formula should be simply fixed to 9+STR-TOU ;)
