First Impressions

PostSun Feb 16, 2014 4:31 am

I would say usually with games the first impression needs to be a good one. As with most games people will decide to play or skip your game usually very quickly so here is a quick run down of a first impression of Dogs of War (With steam)

First I install, and go to run the game... My Firewall pops up like it usually does to ask if I want it to go through, and after saying yes it goes back to the game... which has crashed. That not being too big of a deal I try to start it up again, and get "The Process is already running". Still not a big deal I go to the process to kill it and get "Access Denied" which means I have to wait for the process to die natrually.. Which I consider Mark 1 against it... as there is absolutely no reason to have this.

Finally it closes and I am going to start it up again (which is going to crash again as I am going to have to go through the firewall and tell it to keep the settings.), and this means again I am going to have to wait for the process. So finally I get it going, and I think cool now I can check it out.. Then it asks me to login.. So now I have to tab out (Hope it doesn't crash) and verify some account when I am already using steam. Mark 2

Last I get in, and finally able to play the game.. The game is far from smooth, and between the jumpy interface, and the meh gameplay.. After finally going through all these hoops it best be good, and it isn't.. Its not "Horrible" but it is just middle of the road..

So first impression.. Really.. Really bad. I hope some of this would get fixed, or blamed on Beta.. whatever it is.. Till you have something that works I would suggest at the very least you make it easier to get in and play, or a lot of people will just skip this game.

Short answer: Beta.

Long answer: any of those technical issues would be interesting for the "bug" section. Since it's a Beta it's not yet finished, balanced, stable. Gameplay may not suit your style, to everyone his tastes. I don't like "Pro Cycling Mnager 2014" yet won't complain about it

could you share a better opinion on the matter? 90% of your post is just about some technical issues (which i never experienced btw) and the remaining 10% is just: "this game is bad." This is not a very articulate review other than the technical aspect. Why didn't you like the game?

I will again state.. I did not say the game was bad. I said middle of the road.. Which means with all the other strategy games out there, and other games that are available there is nothing really that stands out as "Awesome". It comes across as "Just another Strategy game", and even that by itself wouldn't even be too bad. Mixed with a bad first impression, even just being anything less then "really good" is going to have negative results. I get that you, and the person that responded after you really like it, and that is cool, but the amount of people who really like it are going to be a lot smaller then those who "Kinda like it" and those who "Kinda like it" are not going to be impressed when it is just a bother to even play.

I will make this easy on you...

Short Answer: Enjoy Obscurity

Long Answer: There is a very short amount of time of opportunity that you have to impress the users. If you give a bad first impression the game better be very good. Unlike your assumption otherwise I like strategy games, and have played quite a few of them. The problem is there is a plethora of them out there, and each one is trying to get attention. Unless you like a small user base then it would behoove the developers of this game to give a better first impression or improve game play (Especially at the beginning as that is their really only chance to impress). Also.. Despite the fact that you may want it to succeed doesn't change the fact that a bad first impression will negatively effect the player base of the game. It is just how it works, and closing your eyes, and wishing it was different won't change anything.

I am curious. What other video games out there are simulating a turned based tabletop game?

Right off the bat: Blood Bowl. But even moar turn based... dunno, maybe some independent games. I could imagine that the game Battle of Wesnoth had some precedessor in the tabletop niche, but it could also be a unique development as computer game itself.

That Battle of Wesnoth does look to fit the bill, but also looks like it belong on the Super Nintendo. I knew there would be some out there, but the post from TheRev made it sound like there were a lot of video games simulating turned base table top games.

Just watched some Blood Bowl and it definitely does seem to fit the bill, though it looks quite slow moving.

Blood bowl is done by Cyanide (surprise surprise :) ).
To the OP: i think the game requires time to enjoy and yes the complexity might scares people. I would love to have 300 AP starting comps as the game becomes more interesting than playing with 2-3 units at 200 AP. It will be more complex from the beginning but it will showcase more intereaction between units.

DoWo is great since you can hop in for a 15 minutes game, send your troops for a mission of a couple of hours while going to work then come back. for an other series of short games.

No other turn based (or Real time) games allow that out there.

I don't find it as complex as many other games (say Battle for Wesnoth). The core mechanics are pretty logical to come by and their application is rather easy to understand.
