[Feedback] DOW 1st Impression

PostWed Jan 01, 2014 7:41 pm

I would like to start by thanking JR for the Key he sent me on December 31st ;)
Then I would like to add that this isn't a bad game, but there is still allot of work to do before its ready for launch...

1) For some reason the server appear to be dead for the New Year, I was hoping that there would be at least one or two other players who would risk logging in but appears that it wasn't the case unfortunately.
So the 1st thing I was faced with was the lack of PvE in the game. I don't mind reduced rewards since this is a PvP oriented game but still, having to farm the Tutorial to lvl up so I actually have a chance to win the Training mission got old, pretty fast...

2) I don't like the fact that the game forces me to choose a Unit composition when I create a Company, I would rather have 2.5k (awarded on creating my 1st Warband) Ducats to spend on whatever I wishes than having to pick units I don't even know the stats lol.
Only award 2.5k Ducats for the 1st Warband, then maybe make it so the Warbands Slots Unlocks at a certain lvl, like lvl 5 for the 2nd one and lvl 10 for the 3rd one or something. Maybe another 2k Ducats could be awarded each time a Warband slot unlocks to fund a new one.

3) I don't like the fact that I have to get rid of units in order to make room for new ones because of the lack of Unit Slots... Its ok that some should open up by leveling, BUT there should be more base slots and I would like the ability to buy some more with in game currency (Ducats).
3A - After checking this in more details, looks like you start with different number of pre-open unit slots depending on the "Faction" you pick when creating your Warband. If you start with 7 Units or 3 Units its how many pre-Open Unit Slots you will start with. Unfortunately putting some Faction at a disadvantage.

4) I am not really into P2W stuff so, each time I come across a F2P game that forces me to invest money in order to have fun playing is a big turn off... I dropped over 500$ into a game that's not even out yet (Star Citizen, because they do it right.
Make everything available for both Ducats and Cyans, add Skins for leveled up units, remove the ability to buy leveled up units and you will be on the right path to economical success.

5) I am not really big into the whole post-match injury system to be honest... 1.5k Ducats to heal my unit ? Seriously ?!? lmao... Why not define "Tiers" of Injuries, and add options to cure each Tier of Injuries ? Something like Light, Serious, Critical and Fatal wounds ? With increased costs for each Tier. 1.5k Ducats to bring a unit from the Dead (+ cure all Injuries) ain't too bad, but something around 200-500 Ducats would be more like it to cure a -1 ACC.

6) I did some reading and saw that matchmaking could be abused somehow, that's pretty bad and heavily game breaking if you ask me :(
Why not make it so the highest AP Unit you can bring into a fight is worth max 50% of your available AP pool for said fight ? That would be a start at least.
6A - Just had my 1st PvP match earlier, I lost and would not have had any chance of winning. I guess that if the MM could take into account the lvl of the Player/Company it would make life easier for the new players with almost brand new units. I know that changes are coming for the MM but still, thought it would be good to mention it, just in case lol.

7) I found that Counter-Attack skill is pretty much useless, partly because each and every unit can counter-attack an infinite number of times (once per unit attacking them, but still...). Most TBS Games I have played on the PC gives ONE Counter-Attack to each Units per round. Adds a layer of Strategy and would give purpose to the Skill to give you the ability to Counter-Attack against every attack.

8) Like some other payers said about the Dices, would make up for more balanced fights (in my opinion) if we could have something like 2 (or 3 for Wulfen) dice/atk. Maybe that could be a way to address the usefulness of Counter/Attack in one stone. HP might need to be tweaked a little on every units tho, maybe up from 40 HP to 50-60 HP for everyone or something, if the number of ATK was to be increased.

9) I feel like there is something else missing from Confrontation but, its been over 10 years that I have played lol, and I have sold all my figurines a long time ago... If I manage to figure out what it is I will update my post right here.

Well that's about it for now, once again its a nice work in progress so far, love the graphics, having the map with Hex is a nice change from other "Squared-up" mas from other games. Keep up the good work guys, your heading in the right direction for the most part 8-)

Happy New Year everyone !!!

Syl

P.S.: I REALLY hope there will be a wipe before the game goes live.

4) I am not really into P2W stuff so, each time I come across a F2P game that forces me to invest money in order to have fun playing is a big turn off.

Current formula is far from F2P as possible - All units and upgrades can be unlocked by F2P player and Cyans are introduced only as a way of unlocking some of them faster. Its realy most F2P friendly formula as i seen... and "unfortunatly" Cyanide must (or at least should :P) pay the employees ;P

5) I am not really big into the whole post-match injury system to be honest... 1.5k Ducats to heal my unit ?

Healing isn't mandatory and i succesfuly play with wounded units gathering ducats for legendary units.

6) I did some reading and saw that matchmaking could be abused somehow,

its more complicated and based on soft/hard counters mostly - while problem should be solved or partialy solved next patch.

7) I found that Counter-Attack skill is pretty much useless, partly because each and every unit can counter-attack an infinite number of times (once per unit attacking them, but still...). Most TBS Games I have played on the PC gives ONE Counter-Attack to each Units per round.

Its like in old joke about "free bikes" that is tolong to translate it from my language.
Counter-atack isnt useles as a Skill but some units won't find it usefull.
Counter-Atack Skill isnt about atacking after enemy atack - but about atacking TWICE if he missed
The Fact that in most TBS enemy counteratacks once - definetly isn't good and tactical. Especialy when number of unit on each side isn't equal. In good old Homm3 retaliating once was strongly abusive for example.

HP might need to be tweaked a little on every units tho, maybe up from 40 HP to 50-60 HP for everyone or something.

Current HP are based about Confrontation 2,3,3.5 wond system od light, serious and critical wound - and its nice.

9) I feel like there is something else missing from Confrontation

Many rules are missing but it's no longer minuature game and as a 'cideo game' it have ist advantages (self counting algoritms that can use far mor complicated formulas to count range penalties for example) and disadvantages (less decisive combat - forced by limited turn time - and a turn must be limited whan you can't "eye controll" your opponent;) )

hey it is nice to have new players on board and hear new opinions to improve the game :) i will take this occasion to add my perspective on some of your feedbacks:

1) totally right, sadly im not playing for quite some time but right now we dont have a lot of players...what i normally do is alt tab while queued and i browse the internet... :) I'm fairly sure this problem will be surpassed once the game will leave the closed beta stage which took more time than expected (i think). I also add that soon there will be a new patch that might shakes things up and bring some "old" players back to test
2) i agree also here i think it would be nice to have an option to either take a premade group or go for pure money to customize one...the problem is that the progression system doesn't allow you to use units like the elite ones until certain levels so if you start from the renown level 0 it might be bad for a new player.
3) they open up the more you play the game...so far i didnt feel the need to add more when i was playing
4) i can assure you i never felt it is a P2W game...next patch will add more cosmetic stuff :-)
5) agree partially...the more you play the game the more you will realize it is easy to overcome the injuries in the end are just a minor annoyance...i think the system is needed also for cyanide to get some income (and improve the game).
6) will get fixed next patch (soon)

check it in a few days with the new patch :)

about #5

Imo upgrading card to removing all negative states from one unit would be enougs - currently its mostly easier too kill and replace such crippled unit.

Thank you Sylmaril for your great feedback list. I'm sure the dev team will read this carrefully. ;)
The game is still in Beta so there's still some work to do on the shop & injuries balance.

Thanks JR, still is my 1st impression. I know I came late to the game, would have loved to get involved more early last year. I still don't understand how I could have missed this game on Steam...

I do hope that the Dev will see my Feedback's as Constructive Criticism, because that's what it is lol. My look on the game is a fresh one, im sure that allot has been done already to improve the game, and according from what I can see here and there on the Forum, there is allot more on the way. And that's great

I will update my thread with my "2nd Impressions" in 2-3 weeks, once I really get to try out the game a bit more in PvP. Probably after the next patch considering the next ~10 days will be rather busy for me.

Later

Syl
