Tournaments.

PostThu Nov 21, 2013 4:53 pm

Firstly I should say that there shouldn't be any engine changes even now to hold a tournament. Adding friends (thru steam) and "challange" is enough for now.

So I'd suggest to hold a tournament dated to open beta release. It will definetly increase an interest both of new players and especially old ones who slightly cooled to the game yet, especially if you will anounce it widely (on steam, in game and on other sites you used to provide beta-keys). I would help with organization as I can. I bealive we'll be able to attract enough players, especially if Cyanide will provide good prizes in cyans and ducats.

General rules are pretty simple: fixed max amount of AP used (300, for example) and pre-constructed teams (so you can't change your team during the tournament). The tournament type we choose may vary it can be single elimination if there will be a lot of players, double elimination, swiss scheme at start (for several players) or for end part (best 4 players).

I don't know when you plan to release open beta, but the best time, I think, could be 29th of november. So we may reserve saturday and sunday (30th of november and 1st of December) for the tournament. Saturday for start and Sunday for Finals. For now I estimate the duration of 1 tournament round (1 game) as 1 hour (not more). So we may have 4+ rounds per tournament day, on this basis and according to number of plyers that would like to participate we will choose the elimination system.

If Cyanide team is interested I will put here more detailed information and final regulations for first DoWO tournament.
Or feel free to contact me via steam (Abuse.Kvark), PM here or any other way.

Actually, I may provide even the whole organization, I would just ask you to announce it and provide prizes (you may just call me the total amount of prize fund and I'll do the rest).

And I do hope, that we will have ingame tournament function someday... ;)

Very nice from you to propose, but we aren't fixed on a date yet really. It's a good idea tough, not sure if we will be able to that but I will pass the word on at least.

You may add (to the statement, that tournaments are surely increasing an interest to the game), that tournaments are the best way to quick check the balance objectively.

And, by the way, why you are not sure at all? I mean what barriers do you see for that?

I mean that I don't take that kind of decision, so I'd rather not make promises I can't respect. Not that there is some technicality we can't handle if that is what you mean.

After talking about this idea with Jolly Roger, she agrees it's great one. We are going to discuss it a bit more on our side and come back to you ;)

Tournaments or not - Fixing stable AP levels would be nice even in current games.

For example - its realy annoying when playing my 291 pionts army - game asks me to drop 3ap or something like that.

Fixing matches to 200-250-300-350-400 would be much more reasonable for planning and composing than curent random (totaly - enemy based) limits. Simply if anyone starts looking from opponents with 238ap then game should fix it as 250 not +/-X levels.

i wrote about the low AP issue already and i believe that 200-250-300 is way too low. The fact that the game allows 100 AP as the minimum is even worse as i happened to face some funny trolls with 100 AP army. 350+ is where the fun begins in my opinion and luck becomes less of a factor plus you can actually face very diversified armies, keeping the game fresh. I think the devs are working in that direction :)

Currently i started to play 300 ponts army but 200 ap could still be possible and fun for some players prefering to command only few weak units. Its all about not forcing anyone to play 200 when he wants to play 400 ;)

In times of Confrontation 3'rd edition Dogs of War expansion was about 2-4 models parties up to 150 points as i remember (while i knew that units was mostly twice cheaper)
