[Veterans neded] Other factions "Flavour"?

PostFri Feb 14, 2014 12:47 pm

This post made me wonder "What should we expect from the other factions to come?"

I'll edit the original post as soon as I get the proper names

"Light"
- LION: Kingdom of Alahan
Regular Humans with a mgic focus?
- ??? :Tir-Nâ-Bor
Dwarves with steampunk technology.
- GRIFFIN: [Empire of Akkylanie?] "Religious Humans, crusaders"

"Destiny"
- WOLF: Children of Yllia
- [SCARAB?] "Greenpeace Elves"

- JACKAL: Orcs of Bran-Ô-Kor
Some noble orcs, seem to be OK at everything.

- "Darkness"
- RAM: Baronies of Archeron
Undeads
- [HYDRA?] Dwarves od Mid-Nor
Dwarves, goblins, with a zombie/frankenstein theme. Some strange building-flesh combinations.
- SCORPION: Alchemists of Dirz
Lots of human clones, some weird mutated stuff

Now, if someone could fix the names for each of these, give a bit of background and tell us the expected strengths and weaknesses of each of these, I'd be very interested and grateful!

"Light"
- LION: The Lions of Alahan
Founded over five centuries ago by the descendents of two Kelt clans, the Kingdom of Alahan is a land of justice and prosperity. It is the most valiant defender of Light on a continent that is prey to Darkness.

The knights and the powerful magicians of the Lion are paragons of virtue. Their exploits have become legendary. The nine noble houses of Alahan are grateful for the honour, heroism and loyalty of the brave fighters who wield their coats of arms.

In an age where the ennemies of Light make use of the most perfidious means, the Lions of Alahan don't just content themselves with travelling all over the world as wandering knights looking for wrongs to right. They make the most of their incredible audacity and their valour in the war that they have chosen to wage : the one for Goodness.

- BOAR: The Dwarves of Tir-Na-Bor
The dwarves, a proud and tenacious people, live in the heart of the Ægis mountain chain ever since the world is the world. The legends of the plain say that these lofty summits, which touch the domain of the gods, are alive. Rock comes to life with a secret shiver and the mountain rumbles and smokes to the rhythm of huge mechanisms of bronze that animate the underground cities of Tir-Nâ-Bor.

The homeland of the dwarves is their soul, and strangers are rarely welcomed there. Those who live in the plains have perpetuated their people's martial traditions while those of the mountains pierced the secrets of the forge and steam. They all await the Argg-Am-Orkk, the final age, an era of destruction predicted by the gods.

It is a time of war. The dwarves raise their weapons and await death with their feet firmly planted on the ground. He who lives last lives the best !
Images of the Dwarves of Tir-Na-Bor

- GRIFFON: The Griffons of AKkylannie
Arcavius had a vision of Merin, the one and fiery god. After having given up his title, his fiefdom and his weapons, he wandered across the continent and his new religion attracted an incredible number of followers. They founded an empire of hope and of Light : Akkylannie. Soon afterward, Arcavius left again to journey all over Aarklash to preach the one god's word. He never returned.

Merin's disciples multiplied and form a people united by their faith. Alas, Arcavius's dream is dying. The coming of the Rag'narok has covered Aarklash with a dark veil. The Griffins have gone on a crusade to faraway lands in the east to find their prophet's tomb and battle the ennemies of the one truth. Inquisitors and Darkness hunters track down traitors and heretics in a terrifying witch-hunt.

"Destiny"
- WOLF: Children of Yllia
In the age when the gods still walked on Aarklash, the goddess Moon gave her blessing to the most powerful of the wolves. He became the First-Born, the ancestor of the noble and savage race of the Wolfen.

Ages have passed. Whole empires have been founded and have fallen into oblivion. Vain warlords fight amongst themselves for their few lines in the annals of history. But the Wolfen have remained faithful to the eternal cycle of nature that has made them the continent's greatest predators.

Alas, the age of the Rag'narok has befallen Aarklash, bringing with it the corruption of Darkness and the promise of a war without mercy. Anger consumes the heart of the Wolfen and obscures their pure soul. The war packs are growing in number. Those who once fought for domination now struggle for the survival of their race.

- SCARAB: The Daikinee Elves
The eternal forest of Quithayran, on the distant western shores, is a wild domain where the laws of nature are unrivalled. Among the ageless trees roam the protectors of this sacred place, the Daïkinee Elves. This fierce people has bound its fate with that of the Fayes, the immortal spirits of Quithayran. Day after day, the Daïkinee struggle against the corruption threatening the temple of life.

- TREE?: The Orcs of the Behemoth
The orcs of the Behemoth have prayed with all their might that the Ragn'arok ever reach them and spare the Tree-Spirit, the memory of Creation. Alas, nothing escapes the avidity of war and every day Darkness creeps ever higher into the mountains.

To protect its children, the Tree-Spirit, in its great wisdom, has split in two and has reincarnated the immortal soul of the prophet Kamahru in the veins of sacred wood. Armed with the Thunder-roc, Grakkha is his champion and the protector of the sanctuary of the Behemoth.

"Darkness"
- RAM: Limbo of Archeron
More than three centuries ago the barony of Acheron was subservient to the Crown of Alahan. Under the influence of the Order of the Ram, an evil sect, its illustrious lords let themselves be corrupted little by little by their desire for immortality and power. When the Lions became aware of the danger, it was already too late : the necromancers of the Ram had opened a gigantic portal of Darkness to the Netherworld. Night took hold of the tormented sky of Acheron and legions of living-dead poured out of hell onto the now cursed barony. No less than three armies and the sacrifice of thousands of warriors were needed to prevent the invasion of Aarklash by the undead hordes.

A single necromancer can raise a battallion of living-dead fighters; a single fiend of the infernal forces can cause an empire to fall into the grasp of eternal darkness. No one can escape Death !
Images of the Limbo of Archeron

- HYDRA: The Dwarves of Mid-Nor
In ancient times the goblins were dwarves' slaves. When they rebelled, the dwarven lords sent five warriors to the depths of the earth to exterminate the god Rat and his brotherhood who were responsible for the goblin uprising. These dwarves failed their mission and only four of them returned to see the light of day : one of them, Mid-Nor, had remained in the depths...

It is said that the dwarven warriors confronted a monstruous hydra. Terrified, they betrayed their oath and fled. But Mid-Nor fought this nine-headed god for a long time and ended up impressing the latter. When the hydra was about to finish him off it offered him a pact. In exchange for his allegiance it would give him the power to get revenge on his cowardly brothers.

- SCORPION: The Alchemists of Dirz
Dirz, a visionary scientist, once used Darkness to try to spawn the perfect being as Merin had defined it to be. Hunted by the Akkylannian Inquisition for heresy, Dirz and his alchemists wandered for a long time before settling in the merciless Syharalan desert.

Hidden by the dunes and their mirages, they founded the alchemical empire of the Scorpion. Over the centuries the alchemists of Dirz, also known as Syhars, have built a civilisation whose foundations are based on the mastery of life and matter. Inspired by Arh-Tolth, a god that came from elsewhere, they have perfected their sacrilegious knowledge and have mastered the powerful magic of Darkness to create legions of clones and counter-natural creatures.

Ways of Light

-BOAR: The Dwarves of Tir-Na-Bor
Image

Picture a lot of heavy armor and steam-based weaponry. They are also pretty fond of earth magic and get Hard Boiled as an army trait (wich mean they all have it!).

-GRIFFIN: Griffins of Akkyllannie
Image

An army of zealots dedicated to the Fire god Merin. They have Fanaticism as an army trait and all their priests get the Illuminated trait for free. They also have an affinity for fire sorcery and use some gunpowder weapons.

Paths of Destiny

-SCARAB: The Daïkinees elves.
Image

Woods elves with a twist as they actually live in deep symbiosis with their forest merging with plants and insect life. Regeneration is their shared army trait. They can field all sorts of weird creatures from the forest of Quithayran.

-SPIRIT TREE: Orcs of the Behemoth
Image

A moutain breed of Orcs with a different look. I don't really know much about them. They have an army trait called Endurance that make them ignore light wounds, and use a special form of "instinctive" magic unique to orcs.

Meanders of Darkness

-HYDRA: The Dwarves of Mid-Nor
Image

Cursed dwarves inhabiting the deepest pits and chasms of the world. They are actually dead dwarves stitched back together and animated by little demons inside of them. A such the trait for this army is Possessed. Unlike other iconoclast darkness armies they have very strong orthodox priests who also get Illuminated for free. They are truly the most bizarre and unique army of the tabletop game and I don't say that because they where the guys I used to play. ;)
Unfortunatly they where also on the weak side of the game balance.

-SCORPION: The Alchemists of Dirz
Image

Theses guys field clone armies created in the middle of the desert by the black magic of Biomancy. Clones range to regular humanoid smuck to monstruous creatures grown in vats. They have an army trait called Mutagen wich cause some of their stats to randomly increase when they activate. They where one of the stronger armies in the latest edition of the tabletop and very frustrating to face because of a few broken units.

I would love to see the Goblin clan Uraken. Japanese themed Goblin Ashigaru, Samurai's and ninja's.

I want a Cadwallon-themed mercenary company.

Yu could have everything there is on Aarklash - for the right price :D
And of course some desparate and rampaging militamen and the usual ogre, munching at fairies and angering the Daikinee.

Or even better - guild-based companies, for the major guilds like architects, goldsmiths, usurers and stuff.

What kind of gameplay can we expect from each of these factions?

I guess the Scarab will be skirmishing mostly, Griffin more based on firepower and cavalry, Tree similar to wolfen but a bit slower/stronger, Boar ranged supported by tough units and boar riders, Hydra very tough but slow and Scorpion more like horde supported by elite monsters?

Actually, Scarab/Daikinee will be more about raw power and magic. Their troops were mobile, but they don't have the finesse of a Dragon/Cynwäll army (if you remember the Vasadars and Equanims - those were masters of engaging and disengaging in and from combats)

Griffin will field heavy armored units (templar & pretorians) with long range fire support, maybe some lodge units (although I think Cyanid will prefer normal recruits as starting units) and ofc some cavalry (but be reminded, Lion/Alahan cavalry was the absolute supreme ruler of all cavalry units in C3)

Jackal/Orcs usually have low ATT/PAR, but high STR/TOU and they have a very unique magic system - the instinct magic which didn't follow the magical principles of fire, earth, water, air, light and darkness. And be reminded that there existed 2 totally different orc tribes - the Behemoth orcs located in the mountains surrounding acheron, which are Ghenkis Khan styled, and the tribes of the Bran-o-Kor, which were the offspring of goblins and humans, created by the Dirz.
I think Orcs will be all around brute force and rushing into the enemy, very offensive.

Boar/Dwarves might consist of Soldiers of the Plains or other unarmored dwarves and get into the steam segment later on with steam powered armor and weapons. We might see a armored knight of Uren on razorback with his full steam-equipment.

Hydra/Devourer will field half-elves and unarmored wolfen in the starting sector and go for Hunters of Vile-Tis and Tyrant of Vile-Tis - heavy armoured wolfen with lots of damage potential.

Edit: Hydra is Mid-Nor ofc. not Devourer (Devourer have Hyena as totem). Well, I don't know much about Mid-Nor since they were a very underpowered race and nobody played it. My guess is that they will field the usual zombified dwarven infantry, towers of despair or Mid-Nor Firespitter (don't know the real english name) as ranged units and the larvae and cyclops as their most iconic units.

And finally, my most anticipated army (because i played them alot in the old C3 times):
Scorpion/Alchemist of Dirz can have anything. My guess would be Warriors of Dawn with Crossbowmen as first units, having Biopsists or Technomancer as warrior-mage and some strong faithfuls (since faith played a big part in the Dirz empire). Stronger warriors will consist of Ye olde Keratis-infantry, tiger of dirz or a bigger clone (Centurus, Jadharis or Nemesis), and for the Elite probably Dasyatis clone. Living Legend would be an Abberation Prime.
Or Cyanid gives them more support so you have units like the crimson furies, neuromancers or hybrids.

tbh. since Dirz has so much to choose from for different roles, it will be hard to predict what they field. I strongly assume that the iconic Dasyatis, Tiger of Dirz and ofc. the Abberation Prime will make an appearance. About the rest I'm not so sure.
