Question regarding missions.

often when a unit has returned from a mission, I notice that the "rewards" section is rewarding a differing number of ducats from what the mission says it pays out.

Is this number actually your net gain from rewards - expenses? Can a mission's actual rewards vary depending on some unknown rolls? Or is it actually being calculated incorrectly?
