Some new player questions

PostFri Dec 06, 2013 3:17 pm

hi, couldnt figure out some things that might seem obvious :) wondering if you could help me out

-how many units can you bring into battle? I thought it was 6/6, but i just bought one and now I can bring all 7 lol how does matchmaking work, does it match people based on # of units, or AP, or what?

-as a new player, should I be saving up for higher level units or buy some now to expand my team # of units? I know there isn't a right way, but what is generally advisable on how to spend ducats now (I am part of faction of Light/lion)

-What is AP exactly?

-How does a unit die? If your unit gets eliminated during battle, does it 100% mean it will die? (need to use fate card to revive, right) What is the point of injury% in missions, units dont come back injured right? does it have a chance of dying during a mission?

-How does experience gain work? do some units gain more than others, and is a total exp split between all units (meaning using less units = more exp for them)

Thanks in advance!

Hi, fellow Dark Souls player :D

- AP means Army Point. It represents the overall power of your warband. Matchmaking is mostly using this value to adjust balance. The number of units in itself is not relevant, but can apply for specific unit types (like you can have only one legendary unit on the battlefield).

- Your units can receive permanent injuries (including death) from failed missions, bad events, or if getting KO in a match (it will then roll a dice and receive an injury, a "permanent" death, or no injury at all). You can buy fate cards to protect them, but except for loved units you should not worry too much and either go on with them or buy fresh new units.

- You can consider Stances as joker skills for your match. Each one has its own rules, wich should be explained on the associated tooltips.

Have a nice trip on the battlefield !

Unit slots unlock as you gain level as a guild (your level is just above your count of ducats). Unit count does not take part in the matchmaking, as some races (Wolfen) tends to have fewer but more powerful ones.

Units gain XP depending on how well they did in the battle, meaning that a unit that get crushed early is not going to get much. Every unit gains exp on its own, it's not shared company wise at the end of the match.

The way you spend your ducats depends on your playstyle really, some like to have a few but very powerful units, some like large companies of more basic troops and finally some like a nice mix.

For the moment, I would advise you to save up a bit until you get some experience to see what kind of unit you need or would like to add to your company (tank, war-mage, archer, mage etc..).

do not do the mistake of thinking that the more high level unit you play the stronger you are. Just to give you an example, 2 base skeleton warriors and 2 skeleton archers can easily tear apart any legendary unit in 1 turn (if they have the ferocious trait) and even survive to tell it to their nephew. A good company always has a plan B to face any legendary / elite units.

ps: you can have crane just by starting with the right setup right away :)

Very true :) The reason i thought he was more experienced because when i accepted game, it said a notice something along the lines he had to remove units to match my AP lol

I had some other questions hopefully someone could answer:

1. When you buy a lv2 unit from the shop, are the lv 2 abilities empowered already (adding the incremental +AP), they are lit up in the store page, not sure if thats just visual

2. For Archer of Alahan's sharpshooter talent, "Cancel cover penalties for shot", is that for when people are behind a wall, or does it also include when people are behind other people.

3. Do you have to select a level 2 ability to reach level 3?

1. yes you do have but you get to choose which ability you will have.
2. it is about units that are behind covers (half-shield) not when they are behind walls (full shield).
3.yes you do. Keep in mind that sometimes it is better not to level units to their max. The more you level them the more they will be stronger but the more probable is that you will be outnumbered.

I'm thinking after open beta starts, we should start a community DoW wiki, for all the stuff that isnt easily accessible in-game. like Attributes, you can see the name of it from the spells tree, but you don't know what the attribute does. I'm really wondering if I should upgrade my LV3 magician just to know what Hyperian attribute is :)

A wiki is a great idea. You guys could propose what should be added and then we validate a solid and understandable answer and add it to the wiki.

What would be the best way to do this in your opinion ? A special (locked?) forum section, in order to have the information regrouped on the forum maybe ? ;)

I will discuss this with Jolly Roger.
